Google Calendar – Student “Cognitivist Theory”

 

Google Calendar is a great way for students to organise their day to day duties. The student must first sign up with www.google.ie and create an email account filling in their personal details along with their mobile phone number.

Once the student has set up their Gmail account they can now access google calendar.  Google calendar allows students to organise themselves based on a date and time.  A student can enter google calendars which is located in their inbox, four icon from the top right hand corner. Once they have entered the calendar platform, they can select a date in which they may have an assignment, meeting, work etc.

The google calendar platform is easy to use and it appears in a calendar and time worksheet, this allows the student to organise their time more efficiently through hours, days and even months in advance of their meeting or assignments due.

If the student has a meeting in NCI on the 11^th of October 2014. The student can select that date and time. Once the date is selected the student must then fill in the specific information of the meeting in NCI at 9.30am on the 11^th October 2014. The student can then fill in the description, add a video call, add a guest to that meeting alert and so forth.

Each event the student creates can be coloured coordinated, therefore if the student is working three days a week 9-6, the student can fill in their hours of work in advance and highlight it in blue.

If the student is in college two days a week for four hours per day, the student can fill in their hours at college and highlight it purple.

If the student visits their friends for two hours a week, spends time with their family for five hours and goes to training for one hour a week, then student can input the specific information into their google calendar and highlight them different colours.

The student can the print off their weekly or monthly calendar a get an idea of what time and days they have free.  This tool is very effective for students with dyslexia or student that cannot organise or understand the meaning of time. It is very beneficial in that once the student enters the data, the student will receive a text message to their mobile phone, reminding them what they have planned to do.  The student may set the reminder days or hours before the actually event. Student may also delete and edit the reminders if needed.

This E-Learning not only helps the student plan their study hours but it also helps the student gain an understanding of allocating and using their time effectively. The student can bring this knowledge forward into their working lives, furthermore students not only gain the understanding of date and time, but also the understanding of organisation and the feeling of been in control of their lives. Prezi is an excellent E Learning tool that teachers may use in teach their students.  Prezi has an easy to use interface as it allows you to start building your presentation with the option of using different templates.  Once you have chosen your template you can start creating your visual and audio presentation.  You may add images from your computer files or google by selecting the image and dragging it into your template. Prezi also allows you to crop, edit, and replace your images. The exact same can be done with YouTube videos and pdf files.  After you created your presentation, you can view it on the left of your screen and if you’re not happy with the layout, the teacher may use the “drop and drag” facility to place your presentation in the order of your choice.

The teacher may also import PowerPoint or their own content, along with the integration of background music. Prezi operates like a slide show and one may add or draw symbols into their Prezi.

Prezi is very creative which give the teacher the opportunity to engage her audience in the learning process. Through its animations and zooming facility the teacher can focus on one particular point, while also demonstrating to the student the connection between the first, second and third point.  This is very effective when teaching Legal Studies as student can get loss very quickly. 

Teachers may also save, reuse, adjust and even share their Prezi in one of the following, share Prezi, remotely on Facebook, download as a portable Prezi or even a pdf.

Prezi is a fantastic creative tool for adult education, it can demonstrate different visual, audio ideas through practise and the use of information through one platform.  It unique design helps teachers explain individual concepts while also showing students the link between the first, second and third concept.  The teacher also has control over their privacy setting, this allows the teacher to keep their Prezi either private, hidden, public. The teacher may also add selected viewers to view their Prezi presentation.

Socrative is an advanced E-Learning tool for teachers who wish to assess their students. It is an easy online platform which allows teachers to create team quizzes, quick short answer questions or true and false questions.  The teacher may also use the “Cognitivist Theory” in assessing the student’s attention spam, memory, and problem solving skills.

In order to create a quiz or game the teacher must first select either s quiz, quick short answer questions, true or false questionnaire or games. The teacher has the option of importing previous data from their desktop or use their saved quizzes.

The Socrative interface is very simple to use and once the teacher has created the quiz the teacher must then give the students a specific “once off” access number in order for the students to gain access to the quizzes and games.

The teacher can run a report that displays the students quiz answers instantly through google spreadsheet or as an excel file.  Therefore the teacher can gauge the students or a student memory and progress instantly.

The teacher must use constructive questions and students may create their own quizzes or games in class or as a homework exercise.  Socrative is beneficial as it is an instant class online assessment tool that involves the whole class. Socrative brings together both visual and practical learning styles.

Socrative gives the student the ability to interact independently or as a team.  Once the teacher has taught a topic of law the teacher can assess the student knowledge in an instant, this also helps student revise the information that was just taught. The teacher may even ask the students to create their own quiz or game based on the class topic for homework. Socrative allows teacher to obtain a quick understanding of who is learning and who is not, this allows the teacher to use the “cognitivist theory” in order to gauge an understanding of each students attention and memory spam.  http://www.socrative.com/

Blendspace is an innovated E-Learning tool for both teachers and students. It provides an online and face to face experience through the principle “Instruction Theory” of learning.         

Blendspace allows one to create multimedia lessons using videos, text, quizzes and links. One may input their information through Blendspace “drag and drop” operational tool, before organising their content into different cubes.  The teacher and student may select their content from google, their own computer or YouTube.

Blendspace gives one the opportunity to create, edit, review and update their saved lessons, students can move through a lesson while commenting and completing quizzes that can be kept either private or shared.

Blendspace focuses on direct instruction from the teacher and the sharing of information appears in a power point format. The quizzes on Blendspace are only multi-choice questions. 

Blendspace provides loads of educational information and resources which may cause both teachers and student may confusion.

Blendspace allows both teachers and student to interact and share information instantly.  Teacher can add the class to the lesson and view the students who has joined the class.

Teachers can assess student throughout the learning process, the lesson can be shared with the class as homework and is an excellent tool for student who have missed the class or wish to revise.  The content of each lesson can be sourced, arranged and updated when needed, which is excellent for legal studies as the law is continuously been revised as society changes. Teacher can ask students to create their individual/group lesson and provide a class presentation.

The teacher may use the “motivational theory” to examine the student’s lesson, in order to gain a better understanding of each student thoughts and motivation for learning. YouTube is a fascinating E-Learning tool that students can use in adult education.  YouTube is an online platform that allows one to watch or create videos of their choice.  The majority of YouTube videos been short and easy to understand.  The student does not have to sign up to YouTube in order to search and view the videos available.

YouTube allows the student to browse categories by topic, run keywords and scroll through the most popular videos by date, topic etc.  The platform is very easy to use, in that a student may watch a video by just clicking on play.  If a student has an idea and would like to create and share their idea via video, the student must then register for a google account. Once the student registers for a google account, the student will receive their YouTube username and password.

YouTube promotes self - learning and it is a great tool for parents who are home-schooling their children.  The student must remember YouTube is a public space available in sixty languages, therefore personal videos creations are opened to both positive and negative comments. 

YouTube is an excellent tool for the student in that it encourages the student to experiment, gain knowledge and be creative when learning. This connects the three learning styles of audio, visual and practical learning under one umbrella.

It allows a student to watch, pause, repeat or review any video in their own time.  Furthermore, the student can gain a better understanding of their topic choice along with saving their videos to their playlists.

YouTube opens the student’s minds to different philosophy of thinking, the student begins to ask questions and gain an understanding of not only the topic but a new tool in helping them understand their topic.

YouTube would come under the “behaviourism theory” in that the learner begins to question and understands the different methods of their self-learning.  http://www.youtube.com/
